I've been on a training curse for Stern maths. Has anyone any hands on experience of using this as a small group activity for SEN. It seems to me that a lot of what was thought to be old fashioned resources are now becoming fashionable again. I must admit my first response was that it could prove quite useful. It's a pity that it's expensive and that to make the most use of it you would need more than 1 set.
I think I'll have to go in to the dark corners of the stock room and hunt out any old cuisenaire rods that we might still have.

ive not heard of that one. We use numicon for our low ability kids, those working on level 1 and below. Again very expensive, but to be honest you could make simlar yourself after you have seen what it involves
Oh are they bringing those back I remember having a conversation with the Deputy Head about the benefits of Cuisenaire Rods.Other staff hadn't a clue what we were on about.

We also recommend Numicon for low ability, but it all depends on the child. I have found there are those who just stick their fingers in the holes etc etc - very distracting.
I haven't heard of Stern either??
As we are speech and language based we only touch on numeracy, it is not part of our remit officially but obviously you end up doing it due to the abstract language involved.
