I read this article yesterday and thought I would post it to see what peoples views on this are

I personally find it strange they are testing/diagnosing dyslexia so early, I have been lead to believe that it is 7yrs onwards Confused

Also is 'someone' trying to make dyslexia the reason why so many children are leaving school without being able to read/write Question A bit worrying if that is the case.

Throughout they refer to 'dyslexia and other difficulties with reading and writing.' and the implication, as I read it, was not that they were diagnosing dyslexia, rather targeting children demonstrating difficulties with reading/writing.

Whether or not the general public actually make that distinction would be questionable at best in my humble opinion.

I'd love to know what the 'innovative techniques' are.

My daughter has recently been screened for Irlens syndrome (positive)and will shorly be screened for dyslexia again. (she will be 7 then) I was told by the school that they have already done screening but because of her age at the time (6 1/2) she passed it ok, however as it is aimed at much younger children it is possible the screening was simply too 'easy' for her. This suggests to me that there is some kind of screening that can be done at an earlier age.... I will investigate further!

Our school is concentrating quite a bit on Irlens screening at the moment with all TA's having been told the signs to look out for. We have 2 children in a class of 25 diagnosed so far......

dadenuk, the front page headline was explicit concerning dyslexia, although you are right by saying that it was other reading and writing difficulties. I am just worried that it will be a the new bandwagon to jump on to account for the problems in education. There was a letter from someone from the British Dyslexia Society today saying that the government are making a noise about this 'problem' but not putting any money into extra provisions (that's not a direct quote, my summary)

Tiki, I don't think there is anything innovative about the techniques!!

Sorry guys, I am very VERY disillusioned with schools at the moment and it has been heightened by something that occurred today (that I can't mention, sorry).

All I will say is there are a lot of children out there who are not getting the help that they require, and I don't work in inner-city anywhere either.

Has anyone seen the child poverty report out today as well?
