Boy in the Striped Pyjamas...

just finished it.

One of those books that i know i shan't read again. That i dont need to read again.

enjoyed it - though i'm not sure that 'enjoy' is actually the right word.

Utterly profound and one such book which will stay with me for a long time...

Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten year-old Jewish girl, is arrested by the French police in the middle of the night, along with her mother and father. Desperate to protect her younger brother, she locks him in a cupboard and promises to come back for him as soon as she can. Paris, May 2002: Julia Jarmond, an American journalist, is asked to write about the 60th anniversary of the Vel' d'Hiv'"--the infamous day in 1942 when French police rounded up thousands of Jewish men, women and children, in order to send them to concentration camps. Sarah's Key "is the poignant story of two families, forever linked and haunted by one of the darkest days in France's past. In this emotionally intense, page-turning novel, Tatiana de Rosnay reveals the guilt brought on by long-buried secrets and the damage that the truth can inflict when they finally come unravelled.

if anyone has any ideas for the 'summer reads' for our book club then post them for us

i was thinking members could suggest some 'easy to read beach or rainy day' type books to read over the summer....and though it seems a long way off will be with us soon!! hopefully!

im going to start with suggesting Marley and Me by John Grogan

I've just finished A thousand splendid suns by Khaled Hosseini. It's set in afghanistan and tells the story of two women whose lives are brought together in desperate circumstances. It has some truly moving moments. It is a page turner even though some of the subject matter is sometimes uncomfortable reading.

I would recommend

Remember me by Lesley Pearse.

if you enjoyed reading the island then you will really enjoy this book.
Synopsis

Synopsis
The Queen of Storytellers is back - with a triumphant tale of one woman's struggle over adversity. In 1786 a fisherman's daughter from Cornwall called Mary Broad was sentenced to be hung for theft. But her sentence was commuted, and she was transported to Australia, one of the first convicts to arrive there. How Mary escaped the harsh existence of the colony and found true love, and how she was captured and taken back to London in chains, only to be released after a trial where she was defended by no less than James Boswell, is one of the most gripping and moving stories of human endeavour (based on an amazing true story) you will ever read.

im hoping for some suggestions so we can select the next few books to read

anything you want to be added to the list that you are looking forward to reading and think others would enjoy, or something you have recently read that you could recommend as a choice?

im going to suggest East of the Sun - Julia Gregson. Its an easy read and on the summer reads list on the R&J show.
