Hi hapy new year to everyone.
Have to teach small group of year 5s how to multiply and divide by 10 and 100. This will be in 15 minute bursts throughout the week about 3 times a week until they get it. Will probably have access to a whiteboard and ICT suite.
Any ideas, cant find any games for them to play, thought about playing bingo after first showing them the principles etc. Have found some Powerpoint displays especially on Primary Resources.
Many thanks. |

I am having to do the same task. I will get them to physically jump to the left and to the right. I will have TH H T U written in columns on the whiteboard and get them to stand beneath them in the correct place. I will then get a child to 'deliver' a times sign and a zero and ask them to move along to the correct place. when they are confident with that i will then deliver a division sign and get them to move. then move on to 100. |

Have you used the rhyme
If you times by 10
You write the number again
and add a nought.
I have found chanting this in various fun ways often gets the message across. I usually leave a pause between the write the number again then say the last line in a different way (fast, slow, silly voice, actions, each child in turn saying the line after everyone says the rest etc).
Good luck |

we did this a while back last term
do the children understand place value?
Th H T U
Show them that by moving the digits to the left or right is the same as multiply or dividing by 10. Start with smal numbers and work upwards. |

Please don't do it like that...
you're not adding a zero, you're moving the numbers one/two places to the left (multiplying) or right (dividing)...
by all means use rhyme to reinforce the concept, but it is important not to confuse the issue.
Apologies in advance if this is what you're doing, from your post it wasn't clear if you were just saying 'add a nought' when multiplying by ten _________________ A clever person solves a problem.

Sorry Reading back it is confusing.
The rhyme is used to reinforce the concept not as the first or the main teaching tool. It helps some children to remember that the numbers do move to the left.
Sorry for any confusion. Must read more carefully in future. |
