Maize
I worked for 7 years in primary with a child wih verbal dyspraxia. His understanding was in line with his peer group ,but literacy and numeracy skills were obviously affected.
It was very hard work adapting class work initiatlly for him and we relied a lot on Makaton, signs and symbols and eventually he was given a Dynovox -voice activated devise [which he hated].
The success with his articulation came from using Guess what....... PHONICS! That's when I was first introduced to Jolly phonics - long before I used it with other children, The actions from the programme were brilliant such as the ants crawling up the arm for the /A/ sound. His speech & language therapist who came in weekly to school to give me a programme to follow, used JP to base his target sounds on.
Sadly when this child got to secondary school, nothing was in place for him. [not really the school's fault as his mum decided to move out of our local area at short notice. [I had been working with TAs in a local secondary for a year and they were ready for the transition].
Anyway this child ended up being suspended from secondary school, [ he had worked out that if he misbehaved he wouldn't have to go to school.
[also got beaten up and there was no-one to listen to his version of events [needed to rely on signing]
I still keep in touch with him and have been helping his mum to get him statemented. Hopefully he will be going to a specilsed Speech & language school. |

Free Program Resources
These programs were designed to support many areas of the curriculum. They can be used with a range of assistive input devices including switches (emulating the spacebar or left mouse button); touch-screens and pointing devices. Our counting songs also accept input from keyboards including Intellikeys and Concept. All work brilliantly on an interactive whiteboard such as those produced by Smart or Promethean. _________________ Accept that some days you are the pigeon and some days the statue

I did a speech and language assistants course at Bournville College in Birmingham, I have been told there are a limited number of colleges in the UK that actually does this course.
When i was on this course a couple of years ago, we had people coming from Leicester, one from south wales, (early bird on the train each week) and various other places in the UK.
It is worth enquiring at various colleges to see if they do this course or one similar, i have gained a lot of knowledge in Sp & Lang

hi Veggie,
Thought you might be interested in a course i attended last year Elklan it's a ten week course for speech and language. Not only did this help me with understanding the children with these difficulties,it also helped me with other children who speech just hadn't matured the ideas in the text book given on the course is really helpful, we have one on the shelf in the special needs area for everyone to access. Try the website to see if there are any courses in your area i recieved a level 3 in this programme, but you can do levels 1 &2 or just get a creditation for attending.
good luck

Hi
The course sounds very interesting who did you do it with. I live in Surrey there seems to be no courses here. Would the book be helpful without doing the course? |

Hi,
Yes, I think the book would be useful, but by doing the course it gives you the opportunity to practice the ideas and also to make sure you are carrying out the tasks correctly, and undestand them. In my area it was run through the speech and language department. Check with the website or ask your head to look into it.
good luck.
I will see if I can find out if its in other areas through my tutors. _________________ In second year of foundation degree for teaching assistants. |

I've just started the training for the derbyshire speech & lang programme so that we can screen & deliver in school. Need to practice giving 4 word level instruction with a couple of children before next training day. Do you know any good links veggie? I've got 1 child in mind that I will try it with tomorrow. |

Next week I start Narratives, I have done these in the past with a child using similar to balck sheep, but next week I'll understand why I was doing it.
