Is any one else involved in this line of special needs, it is quite wide ranging so I think there must be Question

I work in a specialist speech and language unit, we run various classes within the unit and go out and support children and the TAs working with them in the local schools.

It seems to be a problem that is being acknowledged more. Has any one had the Level 1 speech and language training? Is it being run in your area?

I wish I knew more about it, veggie. It seems to me that S&L problems are very closely implicated in the reading & spelling difficulties that some of the children I work with have, even if the children are not are not 'flagged up' specificly as S&L.

It also seems to cover such a wide range of conditions. We have a child with verbal dyspraxia, whose problem (being almost unintelligible, but perfectly OK with school work) is quite different form children with expressive language difficulties, or semantic difficulties.

I am in a local (unofficial) TA network. One of the members works at a Speech and Language unit, and when I have time to breathe I intend to go and visit it and find out more about the whole subject, and how to support the children better.

Can you recommend any good web sites?

My kids (son is 6 and daughter 4) have speech and language problems. Son was in special care after birth, but have been told it may be genetic?

School are monitoring him for possible dyslexia also - but I have wondered if he has DVD - he has been seeing a local s & l therapist (NHS) for a few years now - but she refuses to be drawn on a dx.

Speech and Language has implications for lots of the children we work with. Alot of the children who seem to be just badly behavaved may actually have comprehension difficulties.

Maize There are lots of oral-motor excercises you can do with verbal dyspraxia, but you need time every day to do them! The ICan website is good, I will look up a few more relevant ones for you.

Miss_Hooley, it doesn't sound like you are getting alot of support, what type of diddiculties do your son and daughter have, if you don't mind me asking?

Hi
I work in a main stream school mainly with special needs. Some of these children have speech and language difficulties especially with pronouncation. I would love to have some training for it is not always easy to help these children. Other children find prepositions difficult and have large gaps in their vocab.

We use a really good programme called Derbyshire for language. You work through word levels that the children can comprehend and express with some really good games.
I will post some ideas over the weekend.

Hi Veggie - no, of course I don't mind you asking, and please don't get me wrong, the slt is lovely but can only give us so much time (obviously not enough)

With both of them the main difficulty is pronunciation. They combine fronting with last sylable deletion (is that the correct phrase for not saying the end of words? lol) so quite often you need to know what they are talking about, in order to understand it!

Son's end of yr1 report said "working towards expected levels" and teacher and Senco seem happy with the work he does, but his speech (or lack of it) will become more of a problem as the year goes on really. He can read, but doesn't like to read to me at home) and his spelling is very poor, although he makes an effort with some words. Numeracy doesn't seem a problem - other than him writing 3, 5 and sometimes 2 back to front (but he is also left handed).

Will be very interested in any exercises etc I could try with him.

If you're working with children who have speech and language difficulties you might try these two web sites

. I've found them quite useful with children I've worked with. I've also found quite a few of the ESL web site useful for printable resources.

I go into different schools every day. The level of interest from the schools varies though, some are just pleased I am taking the child of their hands for an hour Sad
