further education colleges may be more flexible if you have a relevant subject and many will offer training courses while you teach

You don't already need a degree, but it helps...

With a degree you could choose from the myriad of PGCE routes available...

Without you're limited to doing a BEd (with QTS) or Joining the RTP (more details available from the TDA)

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Hi there

I have just completed a degree online - fully online. I am a TA and have been able to study alongside my role. Basically you learn more about your job and research topics around your workplace. There is o face to face and it it takes just three years. It allows you to go on to GTP in just three years. There is loads of support and really nice spirit amongst students who are all working and studying. The degree website is

- it is with Angia Ruskin University.

This is the only three year work based route I could find - and it is tried and tested.

Good luck Smile
Lis

can you tell me more about it

did you have to pay or did the school?
is the school giving/offering you a job as a teacher as they supported you?
how will you fit in the GTP with all your other commitments?
how much work does the degree involve and how do you relate each module to your role?

sorry seems like im asking you for an essay but im sure you have the answers Wink

I qualified for fee support - so no cash left my own hands! (even better!) but I think this depends on your household income. If it is less than a certain amount then it is free in effect through your own LEA. I know that some other TA's were sponsored by their schools though.

My school is offering me a job - my own children go there so there is no sense in me moving until they are older now. GTP is happening from September - the school are very supportive so that helps. Any idea of it being hard must be balanced by the euphoria I feel at this being the final hurdle to my dream.

The degree was OK to fit in with work because each module is about work, so you learn about your school and who does what and what the expectations of different roles are, then later you get to choose areas of your own practice to improve. Some TA's focused on developing online learning learning spaces, others looked at behaviour management and some looked at handwriting development, some looked at personalising learning programmes. Each module is adapted to suit your own role, the tutors help you to find topics which are work related. I won't say that it was easy - it was bloomin' hard sometimes but there was a lot of help, and it really helped me at work to get better at my own job. And now to teach.

Good luck to anyone on the same journey.
