I have recently been asked if I am interested in taking on an HLTA role due to an experienced HLTA announcing that she is leaving. I declined for various reasons but low pay for the responsibility given was one of them. I was told that HLTA pay is about double normal TA pay per hour but I have had conflicting reports from HLTAs, some who say that it is about 80p an hour more, others say over £3 an hour more. I don't think I would change my mind but would be interested to know what HLTAs are getting paid?

Our HLTAs start at £18,162 per annum (FTE) so you'd need to relate that to your annual pay

Have just seen an HLTA job advertised at £20000 to £21000 pro rata, which for 30 hours is nearly £15000. Much more than the £10100 that I get for 30 hours at the moment.

How do these annual salaries relate to hourly pay? Anyone doing some TA hours ansd some HLTA hours who can compare on their payslip?

18000 FTE is about £12.25 / hour (42 weeks, 35 hours a week)

10000 is about £8 / hour (42 weeks, 30 hours a week)

Of course, TA hourly rates will depend on a number of factors including, but not limited to, contract level, continuous service, any enhancements, where you're employed...

BUT, if the foregoing represents the 'average' then there's about a 50% increase over base pay.

It depends on what scale you are on. I think I will only get 46p an hour more than now.I am on point 17.I rang Payroll and asked a while ago and because I get SEN rate of 65p per hour I will only be 46p better off as I lose the 65p for HLTA rate.They said it may be changed in April but I am doing it for myself and then decide afterwards whether I will take on anymore PPA if asked. At the moment the answer would be no because the amount of work I put in it's not worth it. I do all my own planning.

Make sure you know whether it is 52 weeks per year or not. It makes a big difference. It depends on the school, not the County. Also scales vary too from one county to another.
