If blood inside the body is blue, and turns red when exposed to oxygen, if you cut someone in a room with no oxygen would the blood be blue??

My answer: not according to the movies Very Happy

You wouldn't be alive to cut them if there was no oxygen in the room, or are you wearing a mask and O2 tank?

D'oh!

Actually your right, the blood isn't blue Embarassed As I recall it is bright red when leaving the heart due to high oxygen, and dark red in the veins due to high carbon dioxide content. I can't remember the reason why veins appear blue.

Actually, blood plasma is kinda yellowy... it's the platelets that are red (more vibrant when oxygenated)...

And veins appear blue due to 'scattering & absorption of light of different spectra'... you're looking at them through the skin, the dark red blood inside doesn't reflect the little transmitted light very well, what does reflect is towards the blue end of the spectrum and this diffuses throughout the surrounding tissue... making them appear blue.

Take a piece of plain white paper and punch a round hole in it, place over a vein, what colour do you see?

LOL trueblue,

No need to feel inferior to scientists, it is a posh word for those who can find bigger and better ways to make you dead.

Then again I am probably guilty of watching too many apocolyptic films etc. Wink
