As I have just received my P60 today I was wondering if everyone would prefer a National Pay Scale for TAs and HLTAs?

If you would like to research your LA and see the rates of pay for the county you don't need to say which county it is or you can PM me and I will put a list up at the end of the week. Then we will all know which county to move to Very Happy

If you do PPA is it at the same rate of pay?
Or how much more do you get paid above your normal rate of pay per hour?
( I don't expect you to give your personal normal rate of pay.)

If it is more do you think it is worth it, if you do the planning?

How much per hour do you think TAs and HLTAs should be paid if we were to have a National Pay Rate?

Yes. We are definately underpaid. The government know that most of us are parents and that's all they see us as.

They don't realise that without us schools couldn't survive. Many of us do our jobs and more.

Yes it's convenient for us that have kids, but we are also trained and skilled in our jobs and we love it.

They've got us over a barrel.

I do planning, my pupil isn't working on the curriculam.

PPA staff get paid a slightly higher wage for that time.

What should we be paid? Tricky one really....double what we are paid at the moment.

I'd love to see a national pay rate.

I'd also like to see a stop to the multitude of job titles and the sorting out of the different levels. You can work as a level 2 in one county and someone doing a similar job can be a level 4 in another. Everything is so messed up that TAs (or whatever your title is) within the same school don't know how they stand. Contracts are so ambiguous that in reality you can end up doing something that really should be done at another level.

Heaven knows if, or when, or how it will be all sorted out. I don't hold out hope that it will be done sooner rather than later.

All schools rely on the goodwill of their non teaching staff and heaven help them if we started to work our contract times only.

What should we be paid? I don't really know, I do know though that we're worth a lot more than we get paid but I seriously doubt we'll ever achieve that till the Teachers get a realistic pay rise as well. The powers that be will want to make sure that there is a reasonable gap between the two pay structures.

Sorry Jack, I was being lazy as I read Tiki's post and she has said it all.

Yes, I think I should earn more and yes it should be on an agreed national scale.

I have had several chats with my HT and unon rep because it appears that one-to-one TA's will still be on the lowest pay scale and these are the TAs that have to have special training, have the children that have bigger demands, and although are meant to work predominantly with one pupil are more likely to have several pupils with different needs.

As a one-to-one TA that has trained and gained several qualifications over five years, it is starting to tick me off that we are given grade 1 to 2 irrespective of qualification, (because thats all county will pay).

I agree that if you are qualified, planning, teaching (small group work) or given children with specialist needs you should be paid more and I feel its unfair when a general TA can earn more without qualifications or specialist training than me. It doesnt encourage us to continue training or taking time out of our family life to do courses or qualifications. As it stands a HLTA would only get scale 1 to 2 if they took a one-to-one contract - HOW CAN THIS BE RIGHT!!!!!

True I could say a lot more but Jack would have to stamp all over it in red. Wink

One of the problems I think is that those of us who have been workings as TAs for a while feel as if we're hitting our heads on a brick wall. We know all the pay/levels/different county/ etc problems we've lived with them for a long time. We've heard all the 'it will be sorted out' speel so many times that we don't believe anything will actually happen. Nor is there anything we can do to improve our lot other than I suppose strike.

This is a topic that you can talk about till the cows come home! I agree with what's been said. Like tiki said we've been told sooooo many times it's being sorted! Long term strike would show what we're worth but that'll never happen and shouldn't have to happen!! Don't know what the answer is? Evil or Very Mad

Way back when the dinosaurs rules the earth 1:1 were the highest paid. As we do't normally talk about our pay to each other it was only by accident when I was helping a new 1:1 at our school with her pay claims a number of years ago that I found out that they are now amongst the worse paid.

Here. 1:1 are usually paid at the lowest rate. The newest TA advert on our LEA website is for children with learning and physical needs. Pay? Starting at 6.85 an hour.

How do you find out the LA rate? I have looked on the council website and can't find anything. Our school pay us at scale 4 termtime only but other schools in the LA pay at 2 or 3. Are the payscales the same in every LA or are there different rates for the same scale.

We are quite well paid (relatively speaking) but the thing that gets me is we all work different hours. Some start at 8.45 and some at 9 and most finish at 3 but 2 at 3.15. This causes confusion and it looks as is some are either late starting or leaving early so many of us end up working 8.45 to 3.15 whatever we are paid for. I even apologised for being late the other day when I didn't get in until 8.50 because I was delayed - I am a 9am starter. Rolling Eyes

I would certainly strike for a National pay policy for TAs if I thought it would get anywhere but the unions don't seem to want to fight for this.

I agree that we should have a national pay scale for TA's and the sooner the better. It works for teachers. I don't understand why anyone would think it was right to have different pay structures in different regions for people who are doing the same job. I'll stop now before I start ranting!
