Hi dancing queen, the statement is:
Even young children can be involved in decsion making in the family and in schools. Use the course materials to illustrate how children can be involved and why involvement may be difficult.

My tutor says i have to explain about reward charts, alfie kohn theory and circle time. I have a little understanding of all these concepts, but i am having troubles understanding what relation they bear to the statement. If that makes sense!! Sorry to be soooooooo dense lol. It's just not clicking in my head and diminishing my small amount of confidence.

Thanks, Caroline

maybe some members who work with younger children would have more ideas, but is it that by their behaviour they are involved in the decisions? and that they can make decisions through their behaviour?

ie good behaviour will result in happy family/school time as they will be rewarded for that and the reverse true through bad behaviour...

my reply sounds a bit simplistic though Confused

would you have to include areas where children struggle with behaviour such s those with SEN etc? and also think about how they are brought up and the influences on that?

Hi again Dancing queen, Very Happy
No it doesn't sound simplistic at all, i was thinking along the same lines but couldn't get my head round the question. You have made me think what i was thinking was correct.
Thank you for your support it's been most helpful to get a second opinion, and for ensuring no further damage to my self confidence, lol. Have a great bank holiday, and i hope Karma rewards you for being a great help when you didn't have to x

I've just completed E111 and there was a section about circle time. It is a great way of delivering PSE and it allows the children to be involved in decision making, give their opinions and views etc thus contributing to a democratic ethos. Children have the right to have their views and opinions heard and circle time can help initiate this. Problem being is that if you have a child who has opinions but is very shy then how can they have their views heard? I guess then it is up to the adults to watch out for these children and encourage them so that they feel comfortable contributing.
Anyway, thats my little bit about that....good luck! You'll be fine once you get going! Very Happy

Involving children in decision making that directly concerns them 'in theory' gives them more responsibility, recognizes their rights [albeit although they have rights there are also responsibilities from them that go alongside those rights.

So for instance in a Yr 6 PSHE lesson we were covering rights and responsibility. The kids have the right for respect from the teachers/adults but equally in turn they have the responsibility to treat others [pupils and adults alike] with the same respect they would expect.

School councils give pupils which contributes to decisions made on their behalf. This helps they to 'own' any rules/ decisions made creating a positive environment.

In the home a child might be asking for more pocket money but discussions with parents might have responsibilities attached that the child has to partake in. [jobs around the house to earn it] so by involving the children should help create a calmer/ fair environment.
Alfie kohn's theory believes children should be taught to be responsible and respectful. Therefore linking what you say to his theory should keep you on the right lines.
