what happens to my 1_1 job if the council I work for has cut all funding for less than 15 hours support a week. Is the school supposed to pay for the role or has my job gone?

I presume that the 1:1 is for a child with a statement. I'm not sure on this but I imagine that if a statement is already in place nothing will change.

There are moves in my county to change the process as well but here they mentioned 25 hours.

There's talk of an alternative assessment and subsequent funding process.

SEN Funding Scheme

IPSEA has received an unprecedented number of complaints from both parents and voluntary organisations about Hertfordshire's new funding system for special needs.

IPSEA's Chief Executive Roger Inman comments:

"Parents and schools alike are confused and concerned about how children will have their needs met by a new system that seeks to replace the tried and tested safeguards of Local Authority assessments and statements which children are entitled to under the law. Instead of a system which gives parents a say, Hertfordshire have set up a new special needs assessment system and method of funding which cut parents out, is unfair to many schools and involves inadequate systems to check that taxpayers' money is being spent on the children that actually need it.

We sent a letter in August 2007 to Hertfordshire, and are in talks with them, but they have not yet made any formal response.

A formal complaint to Ed Balls, the Secretary of State for Education, may be necessary to resolve this growing problem."

Not sure what the update is on this action, but any authority moving away from the current system can expect it to be challenged. Especially where one to one support is expected to be lost.

Issues around one to one support are probably among the most contentious for parents with special needs in schools.

Hi thanks for the replies but this child does not have a statement , he is on school action plus and so far i have not been told what is to happen with this child.I just wondered whether the school has an obligation to keep my role or to just leave this child with no support other than the already harrassed teacher.

1 to 1 is above school action plus, are they looking to have the child statemented?

It is a difficult one. I was told 4 years ago the aim was to move away from statementing and to reorganise how sen was being financed. Like many schools yours sound as if it may be committed to inclusion, unfortunately not all are.

The school has obviously found the funding for you, either internally or externally. If the child is settling in and coping I would imagine your position is safe.

If they are looking for the child to be statemented, or they are struggling within mainstream then your position may be less secure. It realy depends on what your county is planning to do to fund those needing one to one for less then the hours stated. Something has to be done, these children need the additional support if they are to cope in mainstream, and thanks to government policy there is no longer enough special school places for them.

Sorry not the yes or no answer you are looking for, but seriously the only ones who can answer it is your school.

School Action + means that the School gets support from outside specialists, so that alternative interventions and additional or different strategies to those provided for the child.

Sometimes the school funds additional support for that child not only as a way of supporting the child but also as evidence that the child needs additional support above and beyond what the school normally provides. Quite often a general TA is given extra hours to cover such a child. This will be on a temporary contract and at the discretion of the HT.

You don't say how many hours you are working with this child or if you have other duties as well.

My job is only to support this child, I work with him every lesson and have just found out that the school will pay for the support for the rest of this school year but then it will have to be reveiwed. (this will come down to whether the school can find the money)
The council has now stopped funding for several children in the school that have 1-1 support.
PS. the parents havent been told yet.
I dont know if this is happening in any other areas. please help : Sad

This is something you need to talk about with your HT.
