I ask this because I run a body gym with another TA and we would like to get out the climbing frame but don't know if we are allowed.
Teachers don't seem to know either. They just assume we are.
Thought I would ask those that are in the know. US TAs
Thank you

I was told that a TA shouldn't do PE at all, that it had to be a qualified teacher. All to do with insurance etc.

this is something that has been debated before and noone has every really found the answer to it.

I recently started a junior yoga group, not the same i know but there was some debate as to wether i was allowed or not, so I phoned the county PE advisor.

She said that the decision lies with the school, if the head deems you responsible then you can do it.

As I say its different because there is no equipment involved but a quick phone call to the PE advisor should sort it out for you Very Happy

part of my PPA cover involves PE, but the teacher records it as Freedy Fit a keep fit class, all TAs were trained, well a man came into school to show us the routines. i also take the children outside to play games and do activities with equipment. i think we are not allowed to use the apparatus.

I can take PE and although not been told not to, I would not get apparatus out on principle. It just stretches the boundaries of my role a little too far for me to feel comfortable.

I support the Yr 1 class and teacher during PE and last term it was apparatus work. The YR1 children get it out under supervision and straight after us the YR 2 class do apparatus and they put it away. One day I was asked to cover for the Y2 teacher [very rare occasion] and I realised It was PE day [apparatus] I was unsure how I stood on this. { I had a student teacher in with me but they are definitely not allowed to deliver PE without supervision, but that comes from their tutors]

I asked the head and he said as long as I was comfortable with it he was confident I was able to deliver the lesson. WE didn't have any high bars out or anything and all the planks were on the floor. The KS1 coordinator left her door open and the head kept popping in to see how it was going.
No mishaps, but I still don't really know the rules. Thankfully it was a one off.

I would not take a lesson outside on my own with ks1, although I wouldn't have a problem with ks2.

All TAs in school recieve the same training in PE as the teachers do. last year we had an apparatus and dance whole day inset and we are all first aiders too.

Im the only T.A trained to take PE with apparatus in my school, i am also the only one to be insured to use it without a teacher present.

I do however get parents to sign a consent form as i take out small groups to use the equipment.

again i was told it is up to headteachers discretion
