I have done in the past. I watched the teacher a couple of times, then she observed me before going it alone. I'm not sure there is a correct way to do it as I have seen several methods and it probably depends on the age of the children and reading ability.

I have done lots of GR and love it I even used to write the plans for the CT as she knew that it was a passion of mine.

If done properly it is a fantastic learning tool, but it is not easy and training was given to all our staff at INSET days on how to do it right. It was also monitored closely and all staff observed carrying it out.

We still train new members of staff now by sending them aaround the classes just watching how different sessions are done.

It is quite a tall order to do it every day though, and 20 mins is not much time to get a really good discussion going. We tend to have 45 - 60 minute sessions once a week and the planning is for a 2 week period.

Carefull grouping is also required as well to make it even more benificial.

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I will try and help as I am a big fan of this if it is done properly.

Smile

I used to do guided reading but at new school teacher does it. Have noticed however there seems to be different schools of thought on how to do it according to different teachers Confused

I do this once a week with different groups of children. I am given information about which group to do it with and what book they are on by the teacher. I then do this myself. I have not had training and no-one has observed me, I just follow the instructions and guidance in the teacher book relating to the reading book we are using. I make notes so that the teacher knows how the children are doing and if they have understood the text in the story or non-fiction text depending on the book we are reading.
