I understand u always need level 2 maths and english but don't always need a level3. I got my level 2 maths and english recently, took 2 weeks with learn direct, go to their centre do an assesment they upload the work you need to do and you then do this at the centre or at home in your own time. When ready you go back and do the test, simple quick and free. |

Thanks Flash will do that. I thought I had read somewhere that NVQ 3 was equivalent to level 2 but maybe that was wishful thinking. Ive been doing my job for 7 years so think I should have enough experience to be able to do HLTA. Nevermind back to the drawing board. |

You must have Maths and English.I presume you mean NVQ in Childcare or as a TA. I know this doesn't count because a collegue had it but had to get English and Maths because she didn't have the piece of paper to prove it.She went to Learndirect.
You also need to be approved by your HT.The HT needs to put your name forward.
Although you might gain the status the HT does not have to pay you at this rate!
Why not go for the Maths and English and when your Performance Management interview comes around put the idea forward as Professional development. If you get on VERY well with the HT you could ask before the end of term because it is likely there will be courses available in September. It is a lot of work in a short space of time if you go the 3day assessment route. |

Thanks for info. I"ve got NVQ 2 early years and also NVQ 3 TA. Ive alread had the go ahead from assistant head. We are a private school so dont know if we will get funding. Any idea how much it costs? You say the 3 day route is a lot of work, how much time does it take up? how much work does it entail? do you learn a lot? is it worth doing?. sorry lots of question but dont want to do it if its not worth it. I work with speech and language therapist and very interested in that, was looking for a course for assistant speech and language but cant find one any ideas anyone? |

i did Adult Numeracy Levels 1 and 2 then GCSE Maths. The numeracy courses are basic and nothing like a GCSE in Maths. Having done all three I wouldn't like to support in a GCSE Maths class or top set lower school without the knowledge. I would have found Level 2 okay for primary/junior school.
Good luck, its a great feeling when you pass. |

Your right there susie, especially 'the grid!'
However I did learn something because I pushed myself and analyzed some results which I hadn't done before and then pklanned the lessons to see if by changing things I could improve the children's scores.I did.
I forgot to mention 'whole class teaching' clarky. You MUST be doing this.

1.I didn't have to pay for it I was funded by the local authority.
2.I had about 18 - 20 days to complete it and it took most of my time outside of work especially the last weekend. Most people say the same although we had less time than most to complete it.
3. If you look on the TDA website you will see what it entails.Basically there are 4 Tasks.3 are long tasks about 5 A4 pages each for mine and Task 4 is divided into 5 shorter tasks. You must also while doing this cover 33 standards at least once.It is alot of work as you need to show evidence for each standard twice(so 9 pieces of work with 66 pieces of evidence in your file).
As for learning a lot ......no you don't as it is you trying to prove you are working at that level. You learn things about yourself and collegues but not much else.
Is it worth it.It might increase your wage but only if the school wants to pay it.I do some PPA so get extra for that.
I did the Derbyshire Language Scheme I suggest you look into that.Did Makaton too.Hope this helps. |

This is exactly why I'm going for the STA as by the end of it I have another qualification, I will have enough evidence to apply for HLTA plus if I want to I can go on to do Foundation Degree in Learning Support or another degree.
I think you have to be careful with the HLTA status as it really is for those who are doing the work and can evidence easily.
Anyway thats my thoughts on it, sorry if not everyone agrees. |

yes im teaching whole classes, doing cover lesson on my own. I dont what to progress and become a teacher I enjoy what im doing. Reached the top of my increments and the only way to gain more money is to do more courses. But lots of people are saying you dont get paid extra when you've completed hlta is this true? |

I get the extra when doing PPA cover I say go for it Clarky.Look into it now before the end of term and you could do it in September and be finished and passed by Christmas.
I did STAC and didn't get paid any more money for it Daisycat.
Likewise clarky I was on point 17 and couldn't go any further. |

Hi Daisycat,
What type of things do you have to do for level 2 English and Maths? Did you do it on line? What college did you use? clarky |
