Hi all , we have a child in foundation2 ( will go into y1 in sept ) she has always seemed able , however with regards to maths she can do various calculations ( + , - , x ) with tens and sometimes 100's , her parents say she gets no particular tutition at home but just loves numbers ......how usual is this and should it be been addressed / highlighted ? for example last week during free play she wrote down around 20 multiplication sums and the respective ( correct ) answers , without prompting or any aids ( number lines etc etc ) I am new to foundation having working in ks2 before so interested in your comments . This child is also a good reader and a able writer .

I would have thought someone should have flagged this up by now, does the CT differentiate her work in any way? Sounds like she is really bright & needs to be challenged to encourage her ability & ensure she doesn't become bored. Have you mentioned to the CT what you have noticed, hopefully she will have already noticed this child's abilities herself. Very Happy

sounds like she/he definately needs to go on the gifted & talented list.

from sept I am working with a boy with autism - he is coming in for 2 mornings from the local special school. he is on the gifted & talented list for maths. we are already preparing for him with work designed for him. although most of his time with will initially be to help him with his social skills

The child should definelty be on a gifted / talented register / list and possibly have additional lessons with other children of the same standard.

Normal lessons should be adapted to include this child, as most kids are still leanring to count to 10 at this age... hard for the teacher but not impossible to do.

My son, also very good at maths began to hate maths as it was too easy ... I complaine d/ explained and they gave him slightly different work and he was happy again!!!!

Wow, yes definately should be on the gifted/talented!
Like others have suggested possibly having lessons with children of an older age and maths is clearly something the child understands very well.
I work in Reception and most children are adding and minusing by the end of the year but have never come across any who are able to do multiplication.
I'm surpirsed the class teacher hasn't already put them in for G&T!
