Knew we had trouble, perhaps it was seeing her scratch her head once too much, that and the fact that we got a letter from school, delicatly informing that a child has got 'it' Shocked
Oh my goodness, just spent over half an hour combing some, not to put too fine a point on it, MONSTERS, from her hair, over thirty at least.
She's had her hair up all week since last Sunday when she had it 'braided' fancy style, a cobweb, think it was called so didn't suspect anything til last night.
Usually wash her hair two, three times a week but let her keep it up for a few days...
My head is itching too just typing about it, though being on the short side I've less to worry about.
Should i use medicated shampoo, or just keep using conditioner and comb the blighters out? Think I might use the medicated and on me too Rolling Eyes

you can keep doing the combing but it might take a while to get rid of them, i usually did the combing as a preventative

what was the advice from the school?...if it was to get the lotion that you leave in the hair, that used to be available free on prescription, though i may be out of touch on that now. I would buy that from the chemist, go through the hassle of getting rid of them that way, then use wet combing as a preventative when you wash her hair

if you get the lotion and use it then make sure the windows are open etc

however there may be new recommendations so speak to your pharmacist first

and tea tree is supposed to be good though im not sure if it does work as a preventative

Morning Andy,

I discovered that my daughter who is four got 'it' as well yesterday Rolling Eyes
I used a lotion on us both which was an oil based one, then went and bought a Zapper from Argos which actually cuts out the need to and lotions and potions.
Which I way prefer, basically the buzzing sound will stop, and zap anything that should not be there and does enough damage to any eggs that they will not errrrm hatch.

Hope that helps

I used to use a

you can get them cheaper than off the official site and you might be able to get them on prescription from the doc

its long prongs are ridged and so it not only removes eggs but crushes them too, most nit combs dont even pic up live eggs and certainly not the dead shells. the life cycle of a nit is about 16 days so if shes had adults then she wont be fully clear for at least that long.

I hated using lotions especially as a lot of headlice are now immune to them so parents would use them then assume the kids were clear and they really weren't so they would just continue to infect others

I would recommend using a nitty gritty and conditioning and combing daily for about a weekthen cut it down to every 2 days to make sure they are gone and then as a preventative.

I used nitty gritty as well. My girls are asthmatic so lotions weren't an option. It took a couple of weeks of hard work to erradicate them completely and then continued weekly as a preventative measure. Don't give up too soon as leaving even one egg will start it all over again as I found to my cost on several occasions.

One other tip. Get together with friends and all treat together. We had an awful year in year 2 with the group of friends passing them from one to another. Even though we were all treating our girls we were all at different stages of the cycle. One day we got fed up and all decided to have a concerted effort and we spent 2 weeks treating all the girls at the same time. Result - nit free for the rest of the year. Some schools have bug busting days and encourage everyone to check and treat at the same time.

I also used something called Bizniz

which was a combination of essential oils which I got from Superdrug. It seemed to act as a preventative although not sure it was an effective treatment.

All the above is good advice Andy.

Don't worry about not washing your daughters hair. The 'monsters' love clean hair.

Many moons ago I told my daughter that I was going to give her the latest mud hair fashion. That way she would never get the blighters. My humour was not appreciated by a very fashion conscious girl.

Tea tree oil works BUT it does dry out their scalp so if your child suffers from a dry scalp it is probably best to use a different treatment.

I think the most novel treatment I've ever seen (!!) was the mother who decided that it couldn't possibly be her little darling that was causing the infestations in the class (the child was crawling with them), and was worried about her daughter getting them (!!), so then and to this day she makes her wear a hat in school, which cannot be removed under any circumstances.
