Hi all
I've just been offered a job at the school where I volunteer, to work with a new intake reception child in September.
he apparantly has very delayed speech, but is able to swear like a trooper. I'm told he will need 1:1, as he wants to be with an adult , runs around the room and is very disruptive.
without wishing to give this child a label, does anyone have a clue what may be 'wrong' with him? short of delayed developement and tourettes, I'm stumped.
He's currently on emergency funding, which should become full funding when he starts full time in October. I've got 1 1/2 hours a day with him from Sep till then, and then hopefully I'll be offfered the job permanently (if I want it)!
If any one can help, it'll aid me in getting some strategies together to go over with the CT in Sep.
At least it's a job - finally. Neutral

sorry it would be impossible for us to diagnose a child from the behaviour you've described, it could be any number of things. have you had any communication from his child psych or any other history?

i havwe worked with a child with similar problems to this.

we have loads of strategies in place for him.

he is going into yr1 in september and this year has been hard work.

when i get a minute i will send you a pm.

his statement is due to come through any minute. we think it will show ADHD, Attachment disorder or possibly an oppositional disorder.

Lots of kids display that type of behaviour the swearing could just be what he hears at home. Can you go in during the holidays and meet the SENCO and discuss it with her/him they will have to provide and IEP.

am going to see the senco tomorrow, as the child will be visiting school to see his new class, with all the other children, sometime this week. I'm going to ask if I can sit in and observe - if he goes of course.

I take it from what you've said that he will have a Statement that will give him 71/2 hours 1:1 As SALT has no doubt been involved already I would certainly see your SENCO and ask to read the reports on him.

This will give you a better idea what is involved and should give you some ideas on how to progress. At this stage I would take your lead from the class teacher. She'll know doubt already have ideas on what she wants to do. I would imagine one of the first things would be to moderate his behaviour so that he can begin to take more notice of what is happening around him.

Just to make a comment re the tourettes query.

To have a diagnosis of tourettes there must be both motor (movement) and verbal tics for a minimum of one year. Swearing tics are relatively rare and in this age I would expect words that would appear rude or inappropriate to a 4 or 5 year old rather than adult swear words. Kids with tourettes are not able to have swearing tics without first having heard swearing in their everyday lives.

Tourettes also does not affect behaviour but does have several co-morbid conditions including ADHD, Aspergers etc but it is possible to have tourettes in isolation.

i hope you don't mind me commenting on this but my son has tourettes and there is a lot of misinformation regarding it.

If anyone is helping a child with TS there are lots of helpful sites on the internet or I am happy to answer queries.

thanks for that, Binky.

i saw the child being collected from school yesterday, and just by listening to the person who collected him, I realise that I'm totally wrong (my apologies) about the Tourettes. i guess home really does influence a lot of what we do.
this chaps language was rather 'colourful' shall we say. no prizes for guessing where he gets it from.

I was wondering if the ticks that need to be apparent for at least a year must be the same tick or different ticks, both verbal and motor? Forexample could the verbal tick be a particular word for a few weeks for it to be replaced by a different word?

Thanks! buttercup.

They can be different.

Tics may increase or decrease over time and sometimes you may not spot many at all.

Sometimes you may only spot motor tics and other times there may be only vocal tics.

thanks everyone for all your help.
you may like to know I got the job today! (last day of term).
it's only 1.5hrs a day for 1 month at present, but it's a start at least. first job since i qualified anyway.
any other tips will all be gratefully received, as I now just have to turn up on Sept 3rd in the playground, and take it from there!
guess thats what's called 'on the job training'.
hope you all have a great break - i won't say relaxing, as that really would be wishful thinking. Razz
