Cool

Hi all

as it says up there ^^ I am completely new to all this Nvq malarkey.

I am due to start an NVQ in sept to become an LSA, I only spoke to the headteacher briefly before they broke up, but I presume I will start at NVQ2.

I am a parent helper 3 afternoons and have 2 paid hours (from sept) supervising dinners.

But I havent got the foggiest what the NVQ entails. Another thing that has started to worry me is I have a phobia to the word numeracy (and dentist) and I've seen it pop up on this site a fair bit. Their not going to force me to sit the equivelant to A level maths are they Shocked

Dont get me wrong I can do maths, just cant go back to the nightmare I had at secondary school trying to wrap my brain cells round alegbra.

Anyway I think thats my questions for now, cheers in advance for replies, think this site may be my new life line Very Happy

Hi Mazee Very Happy

Please don't worry, the NVQ programme helped me enormously as I didn't even have any experience of working in a school before I started it (so you already have an advantage) it helped me learn the theory behind the education/school system, the best bit of course is putting the theory into action Very Happy

oh and don't worry about numeracy, again, it's how the children learn it, and what you can do to help them (not test you on what you can remember or in my case, not remember!!!!)

Am off to the library this morning with wild child in tow, to see if I can find any relevant books, give my brain a kick start before september Wink

I have just started on the nvq, went on the induction day in June and just done my first unit.
I was advised by the tutors to buy the Louise Burnham NVQ 2 book, supporting teaching and learning in schools, ISBN-10: 0435449303, and it is fabulous!!!!!!
You have to fulfil certain standards in the form of questions throughout the whole process of the nvq and every question is in this book and its answer, well nearly, but the other stuff you can just ask the teaching staff !!!!

I couldn't be without this book, its just learning about the process behind everything we do.
I must say on the induction course we did some literacy teating but this was just multiplechoice questions and very very simple, like how do you spell head, haed, heid some thing like that so no need to worry. They said they did not worry about numeracy at all as there were six of us on the course and I think 4 or 5 of us didn't have a clue wiht maths, apart frrm 2+2!!!

If you're definitely doing it get the book,I got it off a well known website AM++++,if I am allowed to say that.

You need to get the brand new book published in April 2008 as the standards have changed and the old book has the old standards in it.
