Hi
(Tiki, DQ please move this if I shouldn't be placing this, wasn't sure)

When I was a kid I had surgery for Scoliosis which is basically when your spine curves. I know there is alot worse problems out there but as a kid its pretty stressful, painful and upsetting. As an adult I have lots of back ache and my back doesn't look 'normal'. I was googleling for more info on it and found that a young girl, Emma, with the help of Gillian McKeith - you are what you eat women - (who has it) are starting a petition to get children checked in school (which would basically mean touching their toes so any difference in the rib cage or spine can be seen) I never was checked and my parents were not aware of it at the time, my daughter so far has not been checked for it, (other than by me constantly). Does anyones school out there do this check?

If anyone is aware of the condition and would like to join the petition the link is below

I think it is a link worth keeping in. I have worked with a teacher with this and had a school friend too. Anything that helps early detection is good by me Very Happy

Everyone in my eldest's year was checked in year 7 or 8 along with height and weight but he was the last year to be checked.

What happened to the health checks we used to have? My eldest had a medical when he started school but not the other 3. Don't even have the school dentist or TB jabs now.

I'll certainly sign the petition.

i remember having a medical at high school and doing the 'touching toes' test. However nothing was noticed. Only at age 18/19, after having continual back aches/pain and visiting osteopath, was scoliosis diagnosed.
My daughter also has it( not had medical at school)...x rays of our backs look pretty nasty and we do have continual aches(rather than pain) but it is not noticeable to look at(i hope) on her or me unless pointed out.
I just wonder how informative a simple 'touch toes''would be??? My consultant said it would def have shown at age 15 when I had the school medical.

its probably like everything else, some things are detected purely because they are seen by an expert, or something ist 'quite right' but if the doctors had the appropriate training then they surely would pick things up and refer them

think of the money and distress that could be saved though Confused
