Hi,

Hope somebody can help me because I really don't know what the best thing to do is. I'm in Scotland and I know things are a bit different here but I just need some advice.

I have a degree and have been working for a couple of years (office and sciencey stuff) but would like to go back to uni to do a PGCE in primary. I have some experience with children but need to get some more before I apply.

This year I have been offered a place at college to study an HNC in early education and childcare which involves 3 days placement in primary schools and 2 days theory (child development, curriculum, children's rights, etc) but I'm not sure whether to go for it or not. I think it would help give me a better understanding for next year but I'm not sure if I'd be as well volunteering a few days a week and working part time (need some pennies). Have spoken to universities and they haven't been too helpful just told me either would be good. Does anybody know anything about this.

Thanks and sorry for the essay

You didn't mention what your degree was in.

My personal oppinion is that if you can manage without the money I'd go for the HNC in early education rather than volunteering. You'll learn a lot more as it will be more structured. You could be lucky and get taken on as a volunteer at a school who would help you towards your goal but you might also find that you don't. Volunteer places seem harder to find nowadays as the skills needed to be come a TA become harder.

Your alternative is try and get a job as a TA. Not only then would you get paid but you would be able to go on courses that will be of help. Good luck
