I've just started the ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) course and wondered if anyone else was doing this work or training for it.

I am not but it sounds a very interesting job, you'll have to keep us updated on what you do and how you get on.

well I've just been on my second full day training and I've begun work with two children. I get to break the ice and establish a relationship around trust with the child first and find out some info about the kids, and talk about emotions and what faces we pull and where on our bodies we feel emotions and stuff, then we can start to slowly work on raising self esteem, or anger management, controlling impulsiveness or developing friendship skills etc.
My school allow me my own budget and time for planning the activities and although it's early days I think it's going to prove a really good use of time. There are some programmes available to download or stream from teachers tv on emotional literacy, or you could visit these sites if you want to find out some more

Hi Summertime,
I got a chance to look at this book/programmme on Monday and I'll be investing in my own copy:

Anger Alphabet - Understanding Anger An Emotional Development Programme for Young Children

What is it? The 26 elements of this programme help children understand anger and to see that it is linked with other feelings such as fear, loss and jealousy etc. They will begin to realise that anger is not always harmful and negative but should be managed effectively. There are complete teacher instructions, including discussion, Circle Time activities, photocopiable posters and worksheets, and ideas for plenary and follow-up work. At the end of the programme pupils will be able to distinguish between behaviours, develop anger management strategies, express strong feelings in an assertive way and learn to recognise anger in its early stages.
Age Group: 6-11 years
Author: Tina Rae & Karen Simmons
Price: £20.99
ISBN no: 1 873 942 69 9

Hi

Have just registered and found your posting to do with ELSA training - I work with EBD children and have been trying to use some ELit with the children - can you tell me how you found out about the training course?
I have been trying to get hold of the info.

I have a meeting with Sebbs to give me some guidence in a few weeks but a qualification would be great if I could get a chance to do it.

Thanks

Crazylady Very Happy
