Hi

Have just registered and found your posting to do with ELSA training - I work with EBD children and have been trying to use some ELit with the children - can you tell me how you found out about the training course?
I have been trying to get hold of the info.

I have a meeting with Sebbs to give me some guidence in a few weeks but a qualification would be great if I could get a chance to do it.

Thanks

Crazylady Very Happy

Hi everybody

I haven't done ELSA training as such but did do a course in Emotional Literacy with Liz Morris who runs The School of Emotional Literacy in Gloucestershire. It was amazing. I work in an SEBD school with sharp-end kids - there are kids with mental health issues, attachment disorders, ADHD, ASD and some who have never had decent enough parenting to know where the boundaries are. My job is Pastoral Support; I do one to one work and in that role I try to cover managing feelings and being self aware and aware of others feelings - this takes in relationships and social skills. I also take SEAL (social and emotional aspects of learning) lessons in which we explore how we feel, how to recognise our feelings, look at strategies for managing ourselves. It's great fun and such a skill for life - IQ is useless if you don't have EQ! Have a look at Daniel Goleman's book Emotional Intelligence. SEAL is a primary stage initiative, but there is a secondary one coming in 2007. Hope this helps!

The course sounds interesting. I have been trying to do some Emotional Literacy work with the child that I work with but have not seen any "proper" resources. It must be a fascinating job, the psychology side really interests me.

I found out about the course through my head, she received the literature through school, as it's an initiative being run in Hampshire to expand the use of ELSAs in schools, this scheme started in Southampton. It's really cheap for your school too, they loose you for a day a month for five months then half a day every half term for support meetings, and the cost is only for lunch and photocopying. The school have to agree to buy some resources and find you the space and time to do your ELSA work, equivalent to a day a week if in a normal size school (150 pupils). The EP that runs ithis course is called Sheila Burton, she has said that they are hoping to expand their area, and that other EP networks are doing similar things up and down the country.
Just done my day on Self Esteem and it was brill, and the work with the kids is going well and already there are improvements to be seen in their behaviour.
