Hi

Cant tell you much about wave 3 at the moment as we have just put it into place, however, reading through everything, it is supposed to find gaps in the kids mathematics which is where they have their problems. Wave 3 is basically for the weakest and will show you where they are going wrong. It seems good, similar i think to springboard, but though i find springboard is good, i find the kids have problems transfering what they have learnt into the classroom.

Anyway, we are planning to start it V soon, so i will share with you what i know along the way.

You can download everything you need to know about it off the net.

Hope i helped.

We use wave 3 numeracy. I don't use it as a full programme but is great for dipping into specific areas of difficulties for some of the children.

How it works is that it covers 4 years of objectives and as previous poster says is for those children who are not expected to "catch up" in the same time limit as those other intervention programmes which are classed under "wave 2"

So, year 5 & 6 pupils would go back to yr 4 objectives

yr 4&3 pupils back to yr 2 objectives

Yr 2 & 1 back to reception objectives.

There are the three sets of booklets covering all the numeracy objectives.
What is different about wave three is the activities suggested in the booklets are very visual or aimed at using multi- intelligence methods.

I like using them anyway.

Hi. I've used Wave 3 with Year 2 and most recently with Year 6 children. I felt that some kids were being ignored in the push for SATs results and my teacher allowed me to use the materials with a small group.

It isn't just for the lower abilities though. A child may have a 'road-block' on a particular subject although their abilities are generally good. The key is that the teacher identifies a particular 'gap' in a child's mathematical understanding which is then addressed by an intensive programme of short, very targetted, withdrawal activities using fairly standard resources (the sort of stuff you will already have in school).

I think a major benefit is in showing a child that he or she can do maths and so boosting their confidence in a less threatening setting than the classroom. They like the additional attention.

The materials are good in that they guide you step-by-step, but this makes them quite proscriptive and I find myself adapting them to individuals.

The other major step forward is that this is an acknowledgement that it is worth putting time into children who are not necessarily going to show up in SATs scores.

Sorry to be so long winded, but it's good to talk
Wink

Hi, I deliver wave 3 literacy & there are diagnostic asessments for this to find a childs weaknesses. Does anyone know if there are specific assesment sheets for the wave 3 maths?
It has been recommended to be delivered to my own child, but her school only uses Springboard. I've borrowed the pack from the school that I work at & it's preety obvious how to deliver it, but do you just use the tracking charts to identify strengths & weaknesses?
Thanks in advance. Wink

can ou ask whoever delivers it at your school to go through it and then you will be able to deliver it to your daughter, you may be able to sit in on a session

Thanks DQ. They have not appointed anyone yet & are employing someone for September. I would even consider paying for myself to be trained but not sure if I would get on the course because of needing the support of a head.

I don't have any gaps in my timetable. I deliver Wave 3 Literacy in the morning & then in the afternoon I deliver some speech therapy intervention programmes.
