Hi. I've used Wave 3 with Year 2 and most recently with Year 6 children. I felt that some kids were being ignored in the push for SATs results and my teacher allowed me to use the materials with a small group.
It isn't just for the lower abilities though. A child may have a 'road-block' on a particular subject although their abilities are generally good. The key is that the teacher identifies a particular 'gap' in a child's mathematical understanding which is then addressed by an intensive programme of short, very targetted, withdrawal activities using fairly standard resources (the sort of stuff you will already have in school).
I think a major benefit is in showing a child that he or she
can do maths and so boosting their confidence in a less threatening setting than the classroom. They like the additional attention.
The materials are good in that they guide you step-by-step, but this makes them quite proscriptive and I find myself adapting them to individuals.
The other major step forward is that this is an acknowledgement that it is worth putting time into children who are not necessarily going to show up in SATs scores.
Sorry to be so long winded, but it's good to talk
