Hi I am starting to use this scheme with some yr6 children, but and here it comes!
Our school doesn't have alot of money and can't afford the £120 these books cost for a set.
Any one know where i can get hold of a second hand set?
Thanks

You have to write in the book to record the children's progress so second hand books would not be available.

thats the downside to Toe by Toe

one of our Borough specialists did photocopy the pages Shocked

and it is a 1:1 scheme too, so a good thing for parents to do at home, it is supposed to be practised every day

Is toe-by-toe still considered one of the best schemes for KS2 children? I have meeting with SENCO on Tuesday to discuss best interventions for a year 5 dyslexic pupil. I would like to sound a bit knowledgeable if possible, but toe-by-toe is all I know.

i have used lots of different strategies, like the coloured overlays/pastel coloured paper/specific fonts etc as mentioned in the other threads here

are you talking to the Borough Specialist? not sure if it is still the same person, but she tests for Meares Irlen, suggests Toe by Toe, fernauld tracing technique

also have got a CD that was mentioned in here, you can look at if you want

its this one

It's called "Learning and teaching for dyslexic children" and you can order it from

Not borough specialist, this is inhouse. Perhaps I should look back in pupil's SEN folder to see what specialist suggested when pupil was tested 2 years ago. He has never had a consistent programme. Now in my class I want to do as much as poss to help. He is very keen to improve.
Our headteacher has called the meeting as she wants to oversee that each child receives the correct intervention. I want to make sure I sound as though I know my stuff!!! The boy's previous TA only used toe-by-toe for 2 weeks then gave up saying it was boring and a load of old rubbish!

we have a girl in yr4 whose mum is an ex-teacher and has been working with her all summer using toe-to-toe - the child is not too impressed but I'm sure any imput from the parents, particularly using a recognised programme, will pay dividends thumbsup

toe by toe is ideal to be used at home as it is supposed to be used everyday

Toe by toe is a good programme for the age you are working with I have used it for the last three years and seen some fantastic reading improvements. It is up to us to make it a bit more fun in the tougher places though, but well worth persevering with.

We have also recyled ours (don't tell) the y6 leavers pass down to the y3s and as we complete the books in pencil we just either rub out or use a highlighter pen so each book is used twice.

I can't help feeling that Toe by Toe is an expensive way of 'learning' phonics, though I know it is extensively used and is succesful. I suppose its attraction is that it is all 'done' for you; there's no need to think about what you're doing next! And, it can be 'taught' by people who have no phonic knowledge whatsoever, and still get results!

I would be more inclined to do some systematic phonic work, such as Ruth Miskin, JP or Sounds Discovery, which not only teaches the alphabetic code for reading, but also teaches spelling alongside decoding. Toe by Toe doesn't really do that.

I'd be very interested in what your 'specialist' has advised, Lbee Confused
