I have started working with a Y7 pupil with dyslexia. He is Ok when copying from the board & great at Maths but has huge trouble spelling or reading.
As a start I have been helping by getting him to tell me what he wants to write, so that I can write it on a bit of paper for him to copy - but I'm not sure what else I can do to help (apart from the obvious like reading stuff to him if needed) - as I don't want to be doing the work for him. Any tips ? Dyslexia is such a huge & varied topic, I'm having trouble finding specific info that may be of use. Thanks ! Smile

DQ has done a Dyslexic course. No doubt she will be along soon with a few helpful suggestions and I'm sure that we've other members who will be able to help.

there is a lot of info and suggestions on this thread

i would also recommend reading the thread in here about Meares Irlen syndrome and coloured overlays,

and speak to the Senco too about strategies and ask her for suggestions

i have a link that i will pm you to look at though it relates to FE, the ideas and strategies are the same, and there is a mine of info on there that you can look through

and you need to try all different methods of working, as something that works for one person wont work for another

use of pastel paper to stop glare, all will have a different preference, reinforcing learning in different ways, so using the different learning styles etc

Thanks for linking to that dyslexics site, dq.

I happen to know the site owner; she has a dyslexic son and she has taught a great many 'dyslexics' to read. The advice she gives may not be 'mainstream', in that it won't agree with much of the advice that you may get from a Senco, or 'specialist', or even from others on this forum; but she keeps up to date with the research and her suggestions are evidence based and very sound Very Happy

Try and find out what his learning style is:
    Visual
    Auditory
    Kinesthetic

Find out about using mind maps?

Thanks all. Smile
DQ - I'm afraid the link you sent me won't let me register to view anything.

The trouble is, I've only been working with him for a week, so I don't yet know all his strengths & weaknesses. There are some great links & tips on here though so I will have a look & speak to the SENCO.

Are you talking about the link to the website, or the forum links? If it's the website link, did you try it direct from dq's message, or did you copy it? I'm puzzled as a) you don't have to register for the site and b) I've just tried it and it took me straight there.

I wouldn't worry too much about VAK, just get plenty of variety into whatever you do with the child!

no Maizie it wasnt the link to the dyslexics.org site, it was one with the materials for a course i did, they must have realised there was a loophole, as you cant register to view the materials anymore!!!
