Brain gym is biblicalesque (sp?) in our school. Used all the time, and even done before SAT's.

Works well to just get the kids awake if nothing else.

I don't know about the scientific evidence of it but I believe if it helps then there is no harm in using it,

When I used to support groups outside the class I would have them for the whole literacy and numeracy sessions. other TAs would have their year groups too and half way through a session we would stop and do brain gym together.

We started off with the one where you touch opposite knee with opposite hand. Then moved on to touching the heels behind the body. plus rubbing stomach and head simultaneously.
We used some beat music. Most of the kids at first would use same hand to same knee. after a few weeks as they were getting coordinated we really did see an improvement in their writing skills and concentration.

By the end of the year we had a brain break routine for a whole song. The kids looked forward to it and would often say "I need some brain gym".

I have a book on it somewhere. It's not something that's used in class regularly and because I am working in a room with a yr three group that are kept head down all the time I find it hard to do it.

Having said that, tomorrow I am going to have another go with it and find a space somewhere in school.
