For boys, a large (adult) white cotton t-shirt (it should come down to his knees or slightly lower) and a belt. Leather sandals are okay, or bare feet. Or, a boy could wear a long piece of white cotton (like a strip of a sheet) wound around his legs to make a pair of shorts, and tucked in at the waist. He would not normally wear a shirt with that.

For girls, a longer white outfit like a long white nightgown – it should reach her ankles. This, too, should be tied at the waist with a sash. Both girls and boys in ancient Egypt often wore heavy gold jewelry, and blue or green eye shadow, and black eyeliner.

Something like this should be easy enough to make for the girls.

Belt, arm pieces, neck piece and head band could simply be made from card and decorated by the children.

The smock either use an existing white dress, or from an old white sheet (would have to cut holes so not mum's best silk sheets Smile)?

You could either do the 'clasic'

or, to make more like the first picture, cut out an 'apron' shape such that the sides will wrap right the way around the child, stick with velcro/buttons/sew...

Depending on the size of the children, you'd get several costumes from one double sheet.

Girl's hair would normally be braided, I'm sure you could pick up cheap beads locally if you don't have them already.

some more pictures to give you some design ideas...

(a simple way to do this, t-shirt and skirt of same (or similar colour), fabric to make belt, collar and head piece... use belt to disguise joint between shirt/skirt)

A pdf with some more ideas... (and a couple I already mentioned),
