anyone any idea how common this is, ive been thinking could it be a lot more common that we think and could it be the reason some children who we know are bright but dont achieve because of 'concentration' problems

QUICK UP DATE !

We have been to see the specialist who was lovely,he agreed that he does suspect that she is suffering from (petie mal seizures) now called absents She's got to go back in 3 weeks. i have got to take a dairy with me showing how many times i notice them happening, apparently they can have as many as 30 a day and most of them go unnoticed.
in between now and her next appointment in 3 weeks i should be called to take her for a EEG this is where they put wires on her head to measure the electric currents.
The specialist will then decide if a brain scan is needed and medication. Confused
They aren't keen on medicating unless they are sevear as there are very common side effects which are weight gain and behaviuor problems
Absolutely dreeding this and also very worried that i'm missing them when they happen which means i'm not documenting them. Confused
I'll keep you informed Rolling Eyes

Kerryl xxx

Hi.

Glad you finally have a diagnosis for Epilepsy.

I work 1 to 1 with a boy with uncontrolled Epilepsy including absences (petit mal) I think I'm quite an expert with Epilepsy now so if you have any further questions I am more than happy to help.

Also the National Society for Epilespy (NSE) has it's own forum for people living with Epilespy and it provides support and help for the sufferer and the carer.

You WILL find it helpful and informative. Give it a go. Might see you there. My name there is Rachellen.

Hi Kerryl, I don't know what to say. I'm glad you have a diagnosis, but sad there had to be anything wrong.

The weight gain may never happen, it didn't with our son and also didn't with any of the other children we have met along the way. The behaviour issue can differ depending on which medication they are put on so if your daughter does have medication and you are not happy with the behavoiur go back and ask to try a different drug.

My heart goes out to you and your family coz I know it is a horrid time, but you can do it and it will be ok.

90% of children with epilepsy grow out of it with the onset of puberty. My son is now 11 and has been off his medication since May. With no sign of epilepsy.

Anything I can do to help let me know .

Love and hugs are yours.
