We have 5 groups of 6ish and each group is focused on a task. 1 guided reading with CT, 1 with myself, 1 group typing, 1 group spelling activity and 1 group listening to an audio book, all groups do a different activity every day on a rota. There has been a trend to just let a group read silently but we have found this doesn't necessarily work with all the groups as they won't gain anything especially if they are struggling to read or have poor concentration levels.
Someone from the powers that be has said that silent reading during guided reading does not fully engage all the children (personally I would give anything to have silent reading time for myself!) and so we have made sure all groups are occupied and on task.
The typing program they do does require them to use their listening skills, and reading instructions on the screen is all part of building upon their literacy and language skills but just through a different medium.
