i was asked the other day if i could start and work with a group of y4 y5 chilren with dyspraxia 3 times a week for half an hour. ive not worked with children with this before, so not to sure what i should do with them.
the teacher asked me to do handwriting exerises and shoulder control exercises.
can any1 help and point me in the right direction as to what type of exercises i should do.
I would get them to make some playdough and work with this to start with to exercise and strengthen hands, move onto clay and if you get some beeswax from a Steiner/Waldorf shop you could use that. You need to put it on a saucer to warm it at first as their fingers get stronger then warm it less. Make little animals with it.Physio thought it was a very good idea when I mentioned it as you can control the beeswax more. If they are up to it knitting, sawing etc all strength fingers. In Steiner schools they don't teach writing until the fingers are strong enough and the handwriting I saw was the most beautiful I have seen from children.
We use 'Gym trail' each morning. Exercises include pegging washing on a line, dot to dot, screwing up nuts and bolts, throwing ball into various ojects. Each task is done for two minutes before moving on, 5-6 tasks each session.
