We are not having anti-bullying week, we are calling it friendship week instead. I don't know why but I hope it's not because they have decided we don't have a bullying problem. I have seen that happen before, school says we don't have any bullying so when it does occur they don't deal with it.
That's not to say that Ithink we have a problem, incidents of bullying are very rare, but I think that's because we are very strict in our dealings and work to prevent it all the time also.

Maybe they want to look at the positive instead of the negative. How we can become friends and be kind to each other, rather than thinking about how we are nasty and bully. Bit of prevention rather than cure.

Not at school next week so not sure what they are doing. But they have had assemblies and carpet times for each class. Discussing bullies, what makes them and how to deal with it. They are pretty good at dealing with 'unkind' children. Though I don't think there is a bullying issue as such.

well i was bullied mainly by 2 other girls in secondary. this was reported to the staff and the girls were talked to. this didnt help in fact it seemed to make things a bit worse. it got to the point where i actually got hit in the leg with a wooden hockey stick and the girl didnt get trouble cos the teacher never saw and her friends said she didnt do it (was i supposed to have done it to myself?). the girls did get detention at lunchtimes for a while because of them bullying me and staff did keep an eye on them, this did help a little but it didnt really stop until one of them moved, then the other one just stopped.

Think the best strategy i found was to try and not give them a reaction cos if bullies dont get a reaction from you they get bored. may not have worked with the ones i talked about before but did work with others who started picking on me, they got bored and left me alone.

as for best way for school to deal with it i am unsure!

My life was made hell by bullies nearly all the way through school from start to finish - primary and secondary. I don't doubt that my reaction didn't exactly help, but it was mainly because I was larger than most; developed much earlier than my peers and because I wanted to learn. Mainly it was mental bullying; I ran away from school twice and after the second time I was allocated to the school psychologist who didn't do a thing to help, while the bullies got away with it. In Year 7 as it is now I was sent to coventry for almost a whole term for no apparent reason that I could ever think of. My bullies were never punished because the school refused to recognise that they had a problem with bullying. The worst case was when I had my cheekbone broken by a boy who decided that he would try to scare me by aiming a hockey ball at me (he'd intended to send it over my head) from about 6 feet away, hitting it full pelt.

The bullying finally stopped in Year 11, but it stopped of it's own accord. I never did find a solution that worked with those bullies. It took me over 10 years and a lot of hard work and encouragement by my husband to finally get over it - I know that sounds pathetic but I left school with no self-confidence and couldn't even go out on my own. If I happened to have to pass a large group of people whilst out, it would give me panic attacks.

I am so glad that schools are finally being made to face up to the problem. It is a problem that affects ALL schools.

i too was bullied in school, but luckily? not until my final year, all over something stupid...i wasnt spoken to by my group of 'friends' for a year

i just had to get on with it, my dad had fought hard to get me in that damn school

anyway upshot was they all left after O levels...hahaha...and i went into 6th form and sursprise surprise one of them that stayed became my best friend

we have just been introducted to a new policy. "SEAL" it deals with the social and emotional aspects of learning. The policy involves weekly/half termly topics to help children socially and emotionally. This week we r doing bullying. Each year group will look at novels about bullying and each cover it during circle time. There will also be a assembly. This is all new to us so it will b interesting to see how it goes. Im approaching the subject with the reception children tomorrow during PPA.
