Hi!

can anyone recommend a website or book on social stories? I have been asked to work with a child using social stories to address unacceptable behviour which led to a 5 day exclusion.
I am familiar with social stories as I have children of my own with Aspergers, but they weren't particularly effective as the boys worked out very quickly that I was trying to address something they did that I disliked, and just blanked the whole thing!!

Any advice would be most welcome!!

Cheers!!

But as you say they weren't effective Im not sure I would continue to use them, I've had a lot of sucess with the with children on the spectrum but also NT children with social or behavioural problems but have always been honest with the child that its a way of helping them to understand and deal with a social situation or behaviour providing the child is able to understand that concept.

I did have one very able autistic child who refused to read the story more that once, to him there was no point, he had read it once so no point in reading it again although I knew he needed to read them several times to reinforce the issues it addressed. I got round this by giving him a reason to re read it and everyone that came into the room was asked if they'd like to hear his story, he would then read it to them.

have you tried comic strips, maybe this would be another avenue to follow and may be more appropriate to the child

Hi!

Back to social stories again!!
I have been asked to write one for a 9 year old boy with adhd/ beh. diff/learning diff.
He decided to loudly ( and graphically) describe his 11 year old sister naked! The class teacher thinks a social story about what we don't say out loud would be useful. I remember reading something about explaining this by referring to ' the bits covered by a swimsuit' being private. This seems an ideal way to cover it ( pardon the pun), but I can't work out how to put it into a social story without it beng a negative, ie we don't talk about.... .
Any suggestions welcome!
