Or rectangles with diagonal cross bracing (form a box section the same way they make skyscrapers).

And / or, use arches at strategic points to distribute the load effectively to the corners (which should be the strongest uprights)

We did a similar thing [well not me personally] a few years ago for a technology challenge week. The pupils came up with some fantastic sculptures such as the Eiffel tower etc. if the photos are still on the school computer I'll upload them [with faces blanked out] here for all to see.
