hi everyone,
I was wondering if any memebers have Dyslexia?
I hear you ask why i was wondering this, well i am
I was told this when i started my NVQs and i have now done level 1 and 2 and recived awards for theses as well and i am on my level 3 and i have had to show horrible tutors at college that yes i have dyslexia but im not thick
I have had to put up with the how can you help children then? answer it is only my work i have trouble with and i have found i understand how children feel when trying to learn things as i have trouble at times, I just wish there was more support out there as i have never meet someone that does the job i do and has dyslexia, or i maybe i have done and they have been hiding it like i have been BUT why should i hide away? I have **** spelling but i have taught how many children to spell? answer to that is a lot For the pass few years and even now i still feel shitty about this and i dont want others to feel like i have done , if you get what im saying, im shitty with words but i hopeme hearts in the right place. x _________________ *~Babybugsusan~* |

I too am slightly dyslexic , it affects my spelling and I really have to stop and think which way round b and d go. My Dad has major problems with it, to the extent that he strugles to write a birthday card. At school he was just labled 'thick' ((55 years ago) and this affected his confidence in many ways, my mum has to deal with nearly everything from form filling to writting out a cheque.
I work with reception and year1 mainly and usually find I am ok at most of the spellings for them but one thing I think I am good at is teaching them to read, I can give them all the different stratergies that I have learnt to use to help them. Oh and I allways have a dictionary on my desk
The collage I attended asked if it would affect my collage work and would I need extra help doing my course work, and in fact were extremly helpfull. I am sorry that yours didn't seem to be at all. _________________

hi!!
i have worked alongside a deaf support tutor who is dyslexic, and im sure many others i have worked with too are dyslexic. He used different strategies to help him, such as coloured paper for handouts and computer programs
if you ask at your college there should be support for you as a dyslexic student, i know as i work in FE..there is no way a tutor should be questioning you on this, they should be suppporting you. Our college has a disability policy which includes dyslexia, as it is included in the DDA
you need to go and tell them , they should be assisting you in this, any problems then email me, but i suggest you find your Learning Support team and ask them as soon as you can, even if they put the tutor on the right track with strategies and support for you
let us know how you get on _________________

Thinks for all the repleys
I also use overlays and my laptop it is a great help as i can change things so easy on it, but this does not help me with having for work as im 2 embrassed to say i have it and the fear i have about losing my job, which is a new job i start on Monday
As for my college im doing my NVQ3 on my own from home and my tutor comes her or i go to college to see her , when she gave me my 1st lot of work it was all set out diff to when i did the 2 and 1 so i emailed saying can u put my work like im used to but she was slighty weird, her answer to if i have trouble with course work is she can tape record me but it dont help if u have aessay to do and have a **** memory like me and she also wanted me to do this so she did not have to mark my work
So i now do my work on laptop and she always has pages off work from me and my other half checks it incase i have repeated myself and i some how get by.
I think the worse thing i have to deal with is the way my course work is wrote as i dont always get wht they asking from me i need it dumbed down as i say so i get wht they saying lol
And as you can tell i have not checked my grammer on this lol _________________ *~Babybugsusan~* |

I found out that I have Dyslexia back in February this year 8 weeks before my 39th birthday!!! I was tested at age 15 and told I did not have Dyslexia.
I've been working since November as a volunteer learning support assistant(TA) and went part time in June.
All my Dyslexia links are at Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | (there are 49!)
I use mind mapping to help me structure my thoughts and what I need to do.

Im not sure about telling my work yet as i am to embrassed by it all, even tho i know i should be, I think as no1 has ever askedi just dont say anything it is not easy to drop into achat and say.
Thank you all for offering me help and support it has meant a lot to me.
I think the hardest part of having Dyslexia is telling people as i have always found others class me as thick which has meant now i dont tell people, my friends are great i can send them texts and they text back saying 'Susan what have you just texted please reread what you said' they i read it and i dont even know what i have said lolit can be like hit my own head agaist a brick wall at times
but my other halfs great his used to my little ways to trys and helps me and me asking how do you spell this, he tells me tosound thewords out but i cant hear the sounds, i think this could be due to poor hearing as a child
I wish i had found this site months ago as you have all been so nice to me thank you _________________ *~Babybugsusan~* |

One of the big things I learnt in the early days of TAing in that everyone is different, you, me, the children, the staff, the parents, everyone.
I did tell my deputy head once I found out. He was surprised. We talked through a few things. I've told some teachers too and they've been helpful too. |

Hi babybugs,
Just to say that i have 2 friends who have worked as teaching assistants in secondry schools and are dyslexic. They were both really good at their jobs.
It sounds like you are doing really well- just that you've have some ignorant tutors who don't know anything about dyslexia! It must be tough but you've already proved that you can do it- so don't let them get you down- what a brilliant role model you are for any children with dyslexia too! |

hey babybugs,
Just to say that I've always been able to write backwards. I could write backwards before I could write forwards so often when I'm writing normally, I still get my letters the wrong way around.
I don't think its dyslexia but it just shows you that everyone is different and learns how to write and read in their own way. Its obviously not stopped you achieving so be proud of yourself!

Hi babybugs, I'm dyslexic, I've been working with children over 15years, been TA for 7 years in a school for special needs pupils. I do 1-1 liteacy and language support. I can empathise with the pupils and know how they feel, they dont feel embarrassed working with me, especially when I have to get the dictonary out to help me spell, they laugh and feel more relaxed. I've completed my NVQ 3 and at first she picked up spellings and grammer mistakes so this made me proof read it and I asked a teacher to look over the first couple of units till I got into the swing of it. I'm thinking of doing HLTA now but not got my level 2 in Maths and English so I may have to take them again which makes me feel physically sick. Need any help with NVQ let me know. |
