Question Hi there,
can anyone please tell me what is the difference between TAs and nursery nurses??
in my placement we all seem to do the same job, yet i feel some sort of us/them divide!
I know NN do a full time college course but TAs get work experience and do college/cache/nvqs as well.(i was told by college that cache 3 and nvq3 were equivallent to the btec nursery course)is that right?
Please can someone explain to me the difference.....I believe they get paid about twice as much as TAs but also that the jobs rarely come up?
looking forward to hearing from you all
Confused

Have voted no because we do not have any NN.

All those who were nursery nurses are now classed as TAs so I have voted no.

We have 2 Nursery nurses who have recently been regraded as TAs but on level 6 and paid 52 weeks. They also do more hours - 32 to our 25.

They go to inset and staff meetings which we are not welcome at.

They are lovely people and are good friends but ..... They are only employed to work in Nursery or reception while we have to work across 3 key stages (foundation, 1 and 2). We do intervention groups. Several of us have equal qualifications and I have an additional qualification to work with children with speech, language and communication needs but get no recogition for it.

Most of us don't begrudge them their additional money, status etc except the 2 tas who have nursery nurse qualifications but are not employed as such. However, I don't consider that they offer anything that we can't.

What extra money? I am a NNEB Dip and I don't get any extra if I work in Nursery or Reception and I don't think our NN do either. We are on Level 3 but that is it unless you are referring to those NN that run the nursery. If there are two NN and no teacher than yes they should be paid extra if they are doing all the planning.
Ours are on 32.5 hrs but that was the advertised job and they set up for the next morning and work till 4pm then they deserve it.They are in at 8 or 8.30am too.
Personally I think there is a job to do and no-one should quibble about it.

Ours are definitely on level 6. One teacher and 2 nursery nurses in the nursery. Yes they do planning but so do we and obviously there is more preparation for each session therefore more hours are necessary. I also appreciate how hard it is in Nursery and Reception having worked in both - not all play as some think!

I'm not saying they shouldn't get the extra, ours certainly deserve it. I just feel that there should be more recognition of all training and skills and equality in pay and conditions where appropriate.

We had to have 5 GCSE or equivalent to get on the course.I did the Diploma and it was three days in college for 2years from 9am -4pm covering a lot of topics and two days on placement.Placement changed every six weeks for the first year and the second year was in one or two schools working in Reception, Yr 1,Yr2,Yr3 and Yr4.The other placements were Special School for a week or two, Hospital the same, Social Services Day Nursery( I spent 3months there) mother and baby placement( I went to a pregnant mum with a disabled toddler and another child) child minder and a private day nursery. We also provided creches for TAMBA and MENCAP and had a creche at the Open Days at college. It was one of the best times in my life and I have made somelife long friends.I went as a mature student. There was a few of us and the rest started at 16.Most of the group are still working -some on Maternity leave now. They work in schools, Social Services, adult community care, abroad, Special Schools and the Hospital.A couple have gone on to become teachers. One is my daughter's 6th Form tutor! We had 6 exams to pass as well as continual little ones, two were presentations oh and a Sport's Leadership Award, 24 projects which were sometimes about 30 odd pages long and including First Aid as one of them. This might give you a bit of insight as to how much work is done.It was very thorough training.
In this county we get a Qualification allowance but I am sure NVQ 3 get it too and it is worth about £1500 pro rata a year otherwise we don't get any more.
