Hi there!

I did this unit a while ago but I will try and dredge up the things I wrote about.

The Data Protection bit - basically I wrote about how children have the right to privacy, not all the things that are recorded in school have to be shared with parents, carers, specialists or outside agencies etc. Also any records you make and keep must be accurate and up to date. For example, I worked with a child who was visited by Speech and Language frequently. Although I made records about the child's sp & lang progress in the classroom and shared this with the therapist I wouldn't let her know anything else about that child i.e. attainment levels, personal or home information.

Importance of Reviewing effectiveness of record keeping system - to make sure that the information kept in school is accurate and up to date, there's not much point having data on a child that was relevant when they first started school but isn't now! Are there any records that you have contact with that you think aren't particularly useful or think you could modify to make them better? Reading record folders, spread sheets for children's data (name, date of birth, attainment levels, special needs etc).

Hope that helps!

SN

also that some more sensitive notes made need to be kept under lock & key.

for example i have worked with a pupil on child protection register & when the book is completed it is locked in a cupboard.
