Sad can anyone offer any help re:how they have overcome the added problem of playing (to the whole class incl' of a child with a severe to moderate hearing loss ) core subject curriculum dvd/video with no subtitles. From these dvd/videos the key point notes are being made by the relovant support staff to give to the child and some but not all of the dvd/videos can be copied (some are too old to copy) & are being sent home. its frustrating for all members of staff concerned as well as for the child. has anyone got previuos experience of working with children like this and how you turned Sad face to a Smile face ? as the child progresses throughout future school years - this will only get worse esp' as more & more videos/dvds will be used esp @ exam revision times. efforts are/is being made to obtain new dvd with said sub titles but again this is not always possible. all others angles are covered its only dvd etc that are an issue.......

is there no one who can sign for him/her?

maybe you could put that as a training need for the TAs/class or maybe a member of the family or a student who can sign would be willing to come in and do that while playing the dvds?

if the child signs you may find some one from The Deaf Association may be willing I know someone who works for them doing TV work and I know she would. They are usually keen to help.

The child does sign and never will be using sign language, the pupil uses various fm receivers instead when they are working... there are a numer of technical issues being dealt with ongoing to sort the fm receivers out etc The hearing loss is an issue for the pupil - from dvd etc because the full learning objectives are not being fulfilled and by asking the pupil questions both oral & written we are aware the precise clarity & understandings are not being gained from dvd etc. there are a number of strategies being deployed but we are curiuos how others have adapted the materials and/or the learning environment to accomodate such hearing impairment. Question Idea Neutral thankyou to all who replied so far.

the child doesnt sign?

i would have thought all strategies to help learning and communication should be used, is there any reason for not signing?

has he a cochlear implant?

i have 2 students...one with an implant who doesnt sign.....and one with hearing aids who does sign

guess which one is at the most disadvantage?

my boss's son has just had an implant, and also signs to enable him to communicate effectively

i think the parents are putting him at a disadvantage by not signing, i hope they change their minds Confused

is that the BBC site?

it may be worth getting in touch with them to see if they have any additional resources for hearing impaired

what is the school/lea policy on this, do they encourage signing within the school, maybe the parents would be more open to it if it was something more children were doing. We also have primary and secondary schools resourced for hearing impaired in our borough, the teachers there may ofer you more advice if you have them too. I know the head of the secondary one came to talk to us in secondary when we had a pupil who needed support

We use Makaton for a few pupils and lots of the kids are learning it. One teacher has decided to teach her class it's great. Could the 'class' be taught? I have come up against this before it is the parents not accepting their child's disability. They don't want him to appear different.Such a shame for the child. What about review meetings could it be brought up by someone else and discussed in the hope they see the benefits.I would still ring Deaf Association they may have some ideas as they have probably dealt with this problem(DVD) before. We haven't any hearing impaired children. The only one I knew had an unfortunate accident.

Sorry catlady, just found this post.

Do you mean by fm receiver a device that links the teacher and pupil hearing wise, rather than a traditional hearing aid? If so they can now be attached to televisions in order to project the sound from them (therefore no need for subtitles)

Have you got a sensory impairments service in your area? They are very good at providing advice and resources. I have recently been on a course run by them for hearing and visual impairments and it was very good.

I could go on forever about this subject, but hubby wants dinner!
